PEFC
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international forest certification system that works through the endorsement of national forest certification systems. National standards are developed to reflect local forest, legal and socio-economic conditions, while having to meet PEFC’s international sustainability requirements in order to be endorse
PEFC certification covers both sustainable forest management and the chain of custody of forest and tree-based products. The international PEFC Chain of Custody standard establishes requirements for companies to track certified material through processing and trade and to make PEFC claims on eligible products.
PEFC and the EUDR
PEFC has developed a specific voluntary PEFC EUDR Due Diligence System (PEFC ST 2002-1:2024). This module can be added to a PEFC-recognised Chain of Custody certificate and provides a framework for organisations to implement a due diligence system using the PEFC scheme and to issue PEFC-EUDR claims.
The module is voluntary and does not replace the company’s obligations under the EUDR: PEFC explicitly states that responsibility for EUDR compliance remains with the organisation. Before making a PEFC-EUDR claim, the organisation must have the scope of its PEFC Chain of Custody certificate extended to cover the EUDR DDS module.
PEFC has also revised its international Sustainable Forest Management benchmark, PEFC ST 1003:2024, to align its forest-management requirements with relevant EUDR requirements.
